Vacancy: Advisor for Coastal Ecosystems

The regional project on “Management and Conservation of Blue Carbon Ecosystems” (MACBLUE) is looking for a highly motivated candidate for the following position to be based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and reports to the Project Director MACBLUE.

 Advisor Coastal Ecosystems Papua New Guinea  

The selected candidate will be supporting the MACBLUE project in advising the PNG government and national stakeholder on strategies of the protection, management, use and rehabilitation of mangrove and seagrass ecosystems in coordination with the implementing partners, assure an effective integration of project outcomes into relevant national strategies and policies and disseminate lessons learnt from project implementation in PNG to the regional and international level. 

 In carrying out his/her role, the Advisor performs the following major functions/duties: 

 Major Functions/Duties:

·         Serves as liaison between the MACBLUE project and its implementing partners SPREP and SPC with CCDA, CEPA and other relevant stakeholders in PNG.

·         Coordinates the in-country interventions by the implementation partners and supports the engagement with relevant stakeholders at national, regional, provincial and community level. This includes the organization, facilitation and follow up of workshops and capacity building activities, as well as maintaining an updated Operational Plan;

·         Supports, based on a legal review implemented by the project, the development of a national roadmap for the creation, adjustment and implementation of national policies, legal guidelines, or requirements, as well as financial and/or non-monetary incentives for management of mangrove and seagrass ecosystems;

·         Maps relevant project stakeholders in country, develops and manages an up-to-date database of their activities and responsibilities and sets up and maintains a close relationship through regular meetings as well as giving and getting status updates on activities on a regular basis;

·         Contributes to the identification of anthropogenic threats for seagrass and mangrove ecosystems and associated ecosystem services in PNG;

·         Manages dissemination of experiences and results in close collaboration with national governments in international technical and policy conferences;

·         Informs GIZ Risk Management Office on security related matters in the project area/s

·         Assists with any other project needs, as required.

 Experiences & Qualification

 ·         Masters’ Degree in ecology, marine sciences, biology or any other directly related discipline Or Masters’ Degree in law, management or political science, with institutional experience in the environmental sector.

·         A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in the environmental sector in PNG

·         A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in international project implementation

·         Experience in advising government institution on strategic/legal/policy development.

·         Experience in the management of activities in either mangroves or seagrass ecosystems is an asset

 Other knowledge, additional competences

·         Dedicated, reliable team player with good diplomatic and intercultural skills and a sound awareness of gender-sensitive issues

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.

·         An excellent command of the Microsoft Office software range.

·         Fluent Tok Pisin and English skills
