Conference to address key regional challenges

P.C: Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council

25 November 2024 - The one-week Pacific Islands GIS and Remote Sensing User Conference officially begins this morning.

Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council (PGSRC) Board Member Wolf Forstreuter shared the conference aims to bring together scientists, service providers, software companies, and government officials to exchange knowledge and tackle key regional challenges.

"This is the biggest of its such in the Pacific.  You have conferences in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii but this conference does not have so many Pacific Islands users,” explained Forstreuter.

“The challenge is to implement new software, to implement new methods. Pacific Islands are relative isolated. The conference is a platform to talk to other Pacific Islands users of GIS and Remote Sensing”

The theme of this year Pacific Islands GIS and Remote Sensing User Conference is Sustainable Management for Coastal Areas through Remote Sensing and GIS.

The conference will feature six different workshops, including one focused on women utilising GIS and Remote Sensing tools. The MACBLUE project will conduct a training on Remote Sensing-based Seagrass Blue Carbon Assessment.

“It will be eye-opening. The conference is for everybody with a little fee” Forstreuter shared.

GIZ Pacific, through the MACBLUE project, is one of the co-sponsors of the 2024 Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Conference.
