Collaboration Urged for Blue Carbon Conservation

6 December 2024 - The conservation and management of blue carbon ecosystems are not only important for current generations but for future generations as well.

This was the remarks shared at the recent MACBLUE Project National Steering Committee (NSC) meeting by the NSC Chair and Solomon Islands' Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management, and Meteorology, Chanel Iroi.

Iroi added blue carbon ecosystems are not only significant carbon sinks but also contributes to local communities livelihood and helps in climate change mitigation. He urged development partners to collaborate with line ministries and regional partners on the conservation and management of these resources.

The Solomon Islands National Steering Committee is tasked to give strategic guidance to the MACBLUE project implementation and includes key national stakeholders from relevant government ministries, academia and local non-governmental organisations.

Key updates included:

  • Blue carbon assessment in Malaita province (Nov 28 - Dec 2, 2024)

  • Alignment of MACBLUE with national policies such as the Integrated Coastal Zone Mangrove Framework and the National Oceans Policy

  • Capacity building for government officials on blue carbon assessments
